Yakubu Aiyegbeni – Dispellor of Myths

Nigerian striker, Yakubu, is one of those players who makes everyone at his new club love him. This is because everyone knows:

1. Yakubu always has a great first season.

Differentgame can’t argue with this. He does. But at some point, usually sooner rather than later, the love affair ends. Just as it did with Middlesboro and Everton. This is because everyone knows:

2. When Yakubu wants out, he’ll just stop playing.

However, at Leicester came the resurrection. 10 goals after signing in the January window and a move back to the EPL with Blackburn Rovers beckoned. Despite then being involved in a season-long relegation battle , Yakubu continued to score goals. This is because everyone knows:

3. When Yakubu wants out, he starts playing.

Here’s a graph charting Yakubu’s goals by month during his time in England:

The trend line shows Yakubu scoring more towards the end of the season in his time in the EPL. He also scores more in the busy fixture periods. This is despite the fact everyone knows:

4. Yakubu is unfit, lazy and doesn’t try very hard.

Attempts to pigeonhole the man have obviously become as futile as opponents attempts to stop him scoring. As the man said himself recently: “There is not much to prove after scoring almost a century of goals in a league considered as one of the best in the world.” Everyone in Guanzhou, China, should just know this:

5. Yakubu, he scores when he wants.
